Split times for National qualification

It has become routine to accept split times for entry into the ASA championships. For 2012 the only split times that will be accepted must be recorded on the first leg of a 4x100m or 4x200m team event. Intermediate times recorded in an individual race will not be accepted. An online entry system for splits will be made live fourteen days before the closing date for the event in question. The National Entries Administrator may request evidence to support an application to use a split time. It is the swimmers responsibility to obtain supporting evidence. Referees please note the above information and advise swimmers who request signed print outs of intermediate times for individual events accordingly. Do not forget that any team result sheet used as evidence must include the name of the swimmer who completed the first leg.

Barnet Copthall at the Seraing International Grand Prix

A team of 14 National Qualifiers from Barnet Copthall Swimming Club travelled to Seraing in Belgium to swim in the Grand Prix Meet held at the 50 metre Olympic Pool on 23-25th March 2012. Over 50 teams from 8 countries were represented including the full German National Youth Squad.Despite very early starts, long days of up to 13 hours and not being fully tapered there was a very positive & professional attitude from the team which was rewarded with some excellent swimming. From 78 swims the team produced 53 finalists, 16 gold, 1 silver, & 8 bronze medals with 7 swimmers finishing in a 4th place. This fantastic performance also provided 13 Meet records, an additional 5 NQT’s and numerous PB’s.During the penultimate event the highlight of the Meet was produced by Freddie Cornwell who swam the 200 backstroke in 2:10.60 to establish (subject to ratification) a new British Age Group record for 13 year old Boys.Chief Coach Rhys Gormley commented: “In all my years of coaching (including on GB Squads) this has been the most professional team I have ever worked with! We are extremely proud of every swimmer and how they conducted themselves this weekend”.The full team comprised: Emily Bell, Charlie Boldison, Freddie Cornwell, Karis Fuller, Yaron Gerber, Joe Gray, Georgia Hare, Jodie Hare, Oliver Keegan, Paige Powell, Jamie Richter, Karolina Siwiec, Maddie Tichbourne, & JoAnne Zambelli. Coaches were Rhys Gormley and Christine Green with Gary Keegan, Sarah Lawlor, Matthew Richter & Andy Woska also travelling as support staff.Full results of the Meet can be found at: www.esn-seraing.be

MCASA Team comes a close 2nd Place behind Israeli National Team

The County is keen to support its swimmers gain international competitive experience and periodically sends a County Team to represent Middlesex in Meets across Europe. This month saw such a team compete in North Portugal. The team consisting of 34 swimmers plus support staff performed exceptionally well and delivered many PB’s and Qualifying times. Read the full press report below. PRESS REPORT – Povoa de Varzim International Open Meet Middlesex County swim team travelled last weekend ( 4/5 Feb) away from cold, snowy London to the slightly warmer climate of Northern Portugal to compete in the Povoa de Varzim International Open meet just outside the city of Porto. The team of 34 swimmers were selected from British Rankings positions and covered swimmers from 12 years to 27 years across a wide range of experience. The meet format unfortunately had to be changed just a few weeks before and so all the swimmers were competing in one open age group and on a heat declared winner basis. This made no difference to the determination and professionalism of the Middlesex swimmers who all raced tough against swimmers from across Portugal and teams from Spain, Serbia, Ireland and the Israeli National Senior Team. Katerina Avramova proved to be Middlesex’s most successful swimmer at the two day meet, taking gold in all her four individual events 100 FS (57.02), 100 Back (61.74), 50 Back (29.39) and 200 back (2.12.81). Katerina also picked up the award for the top female performance of the meet – based on FINA points – for her 100m backstroke. Gina Heyn took a medal in each of her four individual events with gold in the 50 Breast (33.04) and 50 Free (26.64), and silver in the 100 Free (57.43). To complete the set Gina, took bronze in the 100m breast (1.13.76). Both Gina and Katerina were members of the women’s 4 x 100 medley and freestyle teams which also took the gold medal position with Erin Nabney and Lucy Thornton joining them for the medley team and Sarah Procter replacing Lucy in the 4x100 freestyle team. There was also silver for Erin Nabney in the 200m breaststroke with a new best time of 2.39.90. Joanne Zambelli picked up bronze in the 400 IM (5.09.54) whilst Rosie Hughes managed 2 bronze medals in the 50m (30.69) and 100m (65.19) backstroke events. On the men’s’ side, the 4 x 100 freestyle team of Melako Coker, Patrick Jack, Bogac Aythan and Leo Jaggs were victorious in a close fought race taking the top spot in 3.35.76. Charlie Boldison collected 2 individual medals with 26.66 for the 50M back good enough for silver and 57.19 in the 100m back gave him the bronze. James Stanhope came away with a silver in 50 fly (25.48). One of the final races saw the Middx men’s medley team of Charlie Boldison, Adam Plavsic, Bogac Aythan and Leo Jaggs fight a close fought race to make the silver spot. At the end of the two day meet Middlesex finished in second place in the top points trophy with Israel the winners with 865 points, Middx 820 points and third spot going to Porto with 441points. The team had a positive experience with training sessions also organised around the swim meet and the younger ones especially learning about racing in a new environment with a different group of swimmers and coaches supporting them than usual. The trip is another example of the excellent pathway through competitive swimming that the County Swimming Association has provided with the continued support of the county clubs and coaches. Full team: Team manager: Pam Crofts (Haringey), Head Coach: Dave Hobbs (Camden Swiss Cottage) Coaches: Allan Thornton (Ealing), Rhys Gormley (Barnet Copthall), Barry Thomas (Edmonton) and Ed Sinclair (Teddington). Swimmers: Alex Bandarian, Callum Barrett, Melako Coker, Patrick Jack, Adam Plasvic, Katerina Avramova, Gina Heyn, Maisie Jameson, Erin Nabney, Lucy Thornton (all Ealing ),Bogac Aythan, Ed Graham, Leo Jaggs, Rosie Hughes, Sophie Rittenhouse, Olivia Willis (all Camden Swiss Cottage) . Charlie Boldison, Freddie Cornwall, Yaron Gerber, Jamie Richter, Paige Powell, Jo-Anne Zambelli (all Barnet), Elliot Bertram, Mia Hawkes (both Edmonton) , Ted Elson, Sean Panacides (both Harrow) Pietro Revelli, Charlotte Hogarth (both Chelsea/Westminster), Sarah Procter, Alexandra Kaye, Lauren O’Connor (all Hillingdon), James Stanhope, Hannah Rogers (both Teddington) Allan Thornton

Withdrawal of ASA Guidelines

Since the adoption of FINA Technical Rules by the ASA, Guidelines have been published annually in the ASA Handbook which contained certain derogations to allow a more pragmatic approach to the running of swimming competitions covering all age ranges and abilities. The 2011 Handbook was conspicuous in that the above Guidelines were absent. Investigation showed that this was not an oversight but the ASA actually withdrawing the Guidelines. This has caused confusion throughout the sport; however, Len Badcock, one of MCASA’s most senior Referees, has looked at what effects this withdrawal will have on the running of competitions at all levels and his thoughts are contained in the attached Word file for you to download.

Middlesex Swimmers achieve 2nd Place in the Inter-Counties

Each October, Counties compete in the British Gas ASA National County Team Competition at Ponds Forge. The Competition is arranged in two Division – MCASA has been a force to be reckoned with for many years and is in Division One.Last year we achieved 3rd place behind Lancashire and Yorkshire – However last Sunday, MCASA overtook Yorkshire to take 2nd Place overall. This is a remarkable result when one compares the large number of top class swimmers that are available from the whole of Lancashire and the Yorkshire(s) with those that are available from within our relatively small County. This is a testament to the hard work being put in, day by day, by our Swimmers and Coaches and we congratulate all that took part. The results have been attached for your information but we will post a fuller report including photographs in the next week.

However, in Peru, she clocked a season's best of 2:11.50 to qualify second fastest for the final. There was no keeping her from the podium in the final as she took the race to the field, turning in front at the final 50m before holding on for her Bronze medal (2:11.40) behind Ukraine's Darya Zevina (2:10.43) and Japan's Miyu Otsuka (2:11.02).We all agree with Karley that the result was an encouraging way to bring down the curtain on her junior career. She stated that “I'm very happy to get a bronze in my last junior competition before I become a senior athlete. Now I will be training hard for the Olympic Trials next March”

Future Judge 1 Courses

The County Swimming Officials Committee is running two further Judge 1 Courses in the near future. These will run from September 2011 to January 2012Full details will be found in the Word document attached. Please note that the original document showed the date of the first Judge 1 Course to be Saturday 11th September whereas it should have read Sunday 11th September. The document which you can now download has been corrected. Apologies for any confusion. September 2011 sees changes being implemented which will mean that for Licensed Meets at levels 1 & 2, the minimum level of qualification required for officials working on poolside will be Licenced Judge 1 so it is very important that officials ensure that they update their qualifications if they are working at these levels.

Karley Mann – European Junior Champion

Karley Mann (15 years) produced Hillingdon Swimming Club’s greatest ever individual performance when she was crowned the 200 meters Backstroke European Junior Champion in Finland. Her time of 2.11.48 was a British Age Group Record breaking the 6 year old record previously held by Stephanie Proud. Karly entered the competition as 4th fastest seed after posting a time of 2.15.1 at the British Championships in March. However, following a very intense training period Mann swam a huge personal best of 2.12.2 in the heats of the 200m backstroke on the first day of the Championships which was the fastest time in the event. Mann maintained her level of her performance through the semi-final to qualify fastest for the final. In the final she defeated last year’s Champion Daryna Zevina from Ukraine. Karley’s winning time is currently ranked 25th fastest in the FINA World Rankings and would have placed her in last year’s World Championship Semi-Final that was held in Rome.Following Karley’s incredible results she then took part in the shorter 100m event. In the heats she became Great Britain’s quickest over the distance and qualified fastest for the final. Despite her best efforts she was just touched out to 3rd, however, to her delight this was her 2nd medal of the Championships. Finally, Karley was selected to lead out the Great Britain quartet in the Medley Relay. The team qualified 2nd fastest through the heats and this was where they finished in the final, 1 second behind the German team. Middlesex congratulates Karley for her triple success at the European Junior Championships – she is a shining example for others to follow.

Vernon Davies

As you know Vernon has been seriously ill since last October and before and has only just been discharged from Hospital. During that time, he has obviously been unable to take on the formal duties during his year as County President and we are grateful to Charlotte Hedge for maintaining the role of President in his absence. However, it is good news indeed to report that Vernon was well enough to present the remaining County BagCat / Youth Awards to swimmers from Camden Swiss Cottage SC at the start of their training session last Friday (23rd July). This was the first time that Vernon had worn his Chain of Office and although having doubts that he could perform the task before he arrived, he sailed through and enjoyed every moment – as the picture shows

Darmstadt 2010

Middlesex County ASA sent a team of 30 swimmers and 6 staff to the 47th ‘Internationales Schwimmfest’ in Darmstadt held on 8th to 11th July 2010. The team was drawn from across the County and saw a mixture of ages from 13years upwards. The swimmers met a selection criteria which was based on the GB long course rankings up to 1st June. A range of experience covered first time National Qualifiers right through to seasoned international competitors. The competition had 48 clubs in all taking part from all over Europe and USA.The weather was phenomenal! The temperature on Saturday was about 38 degrees and not much cooler Friday or Sunday. Swimmers had to deal with the extreme temperature and bright sunlight – something the backstrokers had to cope with very quickly. The facility was large and did offer some shade. The meet was held in an outdoor 10 lane 50m pool with an additional outdoor 20m warm-up pool as well as an indoor 8 lane 50m pool which was available throughout the meet for warm-up/warm-downsThe meet was well organised and run very efficiently. What else would you expect? – we were in Germany! On Friday we trained in the morning for approx 60 mins; the pool was available to us for 2 hours in four lanes if we required it. The meet started on Friday afternoon (1530 warm-up) with some HDW events and 50m heats for the Saturday evening final Every event had a start time, which was rarely adrift. Results were available promptly and, with great relief, virtually everybody spoke English. The team finished the meet as the TOP CLUB as well as having the top female meet performance (Katerina Avramova – 100m back) plus three new meet records including both the female 4 x 100 relay events. Overall the team won 15 gold, 18 silver and 16 bronze medals. The team gained valuable experience both for the swimmers and team staff. The Team consisted of:-Swimmers: Katerina Avramova, Bogac Ayhan, Leon Berchie, Lauren Chapple, Melako Coker, Ted Elson, Ramsey Haroon, Sarah Harrington, Georgina Heyn, Isabella Hindley, Kelly Hookway, Rosie Hughes, Leo Jaggs, Alex Mackay, Tamsin McKinnon, Tariq Miller, Erin Mabney, Danny Nelson, Adam Plavsic, Sarah Proctor, Aaron Pullen, Devon Robins, Felix Samuels, Louis South, James Stanhope, Charlie Turner, Jenna Turner, Lauren Turner, Olivia Willis and Adam Wood Senior Coach: Allan ThorntonCoaches: Samir Ahmed, Julie Hobbs, Bram Montgomery, Marc SpackmanTeam Manager: Pam CroftsMiddlesex County ASA congratulates all those that took part – our performance in beating teams from as far afield as Egypt and the USA bodes well for the future.
